According to local legend, Princess Ronkonkoma was a Native American princess who lived by Lake Ronkonkoma. The story varies, but a common version tells of her forbidden love with a European settler. Unable to be together, the princess is said to have drowned herself in the lake, and her spirit is believed to still haunt its waters. the legend has it that she takes 1 male each year. For a long number of years a male was taken. but since 2010 or so, no males had drowned and drew the community into ease. There are many people who won’t let their children swim in Lake Ronkonkoma (for a variety of reasons) to this day.
